A história se passa no Afeganistão. Mariam, com 33 anos, não conseguiu dar o filho que o marido sempre sonhou, por conta disso é tratada com desprezo já que não pode cumprir com os deveres de esposa. Laila, com 14 anos, perde os pais na infindável guerra que acontece no país. É abrigada por Mariam e Rashid, seu esposo, que propõe que Laila case-se com ele e lhe dê o filho que a primeira esposa não concebeu. A partir daí outra história começa a ser contada cativando cada vez mais o leitor. A história de amor, guerra e luta pela liberdade nos ensina a pensar como um todo e surpreende por apresentar um final totalmente inesperado.
